Compound Hot and Dry Events in Europe: Variability and Large-Scale Drivers

An important aspect of inevitable surprises, for the climate system, is potential occurrence compound extreme events. These can be events that occur at same time over geographic location or multiple locations within a given country around world. In this study, we investigate spatio-temporal variability summer hot and dry (CHD) European level quantify relationship between CHDs large-scale atmospheric circulation. Here show 1955 stands out as year with largest spatial extent characterized by conditions (~21.2% level), followed 2015 (~20.3%), 1959 (~19.4%), 1950 (~16.9%). By employing an Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis there are three preferred centers action Europe: Fennoscandia, central part Europe, south-eastern Europe. Overall, summers are, in general, associated persistent high-pressure systems regions affected CHDs, which turn reduces zonal flow diverts storm tracks southward. The each mode largely suppresses ascending motions, water vapor condensation precipitation formation, leading to drought below system. This study may help improve our understanding summers, level, well their driving mechanisms.
